My real name is Mindy. Not Melinda, Mindy. I am named after my Auntie Mindy.
My Auntie Mindy died of Leukemia in 1966. In 1966, treatments were rare for cancer patients as only six out of every 100 kids diagnosed would still be alive two years after being diagnosed.
Now, according to St. Jude's, 94% of the patients now survive Leukemia.
So now there is hope.
So big sisters, like my mama, don't have to live without their little sister.
And girls like me don't have to be named after aunts they've never met.
St Jude is the patron saint of hopeless and lost cases. My mom's favorite saint.
And now there is hope.
So take a moment and give thanks for your siblings today.
And I say thank you to my Mama and my Dad----for being honored to have my Auntie Mindy's name.
~me
